Somalia Ministry of Religious Affairs bans Christmas and New Year festivities, says they are in opposition to Islamic society
Somalia's Federal government today Tuesday, December 22, banned the festivals of Christmas and New Year in the capital Mogadishu. It says observing Christmas is against confidence of Somali Muslims and won't permit it happen in the nation.
Chief General of Somalia's Ministry of Religious Affairs, Sheik Mohamed Khayrow reported the choice in a Press Conference held in Mogadishu alongside the Vice Chairman of the Supreme Religious Council (SRC), Sheik Nur Barud Gurhan.
All occasions identified with Christmas and New Year festivities are in spite of Islamic society, which could harm aqidah (confidence) of the Muslim group. He included:
"All security strengths are encouraged to end or disintegrate any social events. There ought to be no movement by any means."
Sheik Nur Barud Gurhan, the agent administrator of the Supreme Religious Council of Somalia said that such occasions may spur radical gathering al-Shabaab to dispatch assaults in the capital.
"We [Islamic Scholars] are cautioning against the festival of such occasions which are not significant to the standards of our religion. Such occasions give likewise al-Shabaab to complete assaults."
